What is

Stamping Die?

Stamping is a forming process that relies on press machines and dies to apply external force to plates, sheets, strips, pipes and profiles. It is a cold forming process, in which heat is neither used on purpose into the die nor the material, so also called cold stamping die.
This process creates plastic deformation or separation, resulting in stamping parts with the desired shape and size.

Types of Stamping Dies _____

The types of stamping die techniques have diversified over the years to meet the demands of ever-changing markets. They can be mainly classified into two groups based on the degree of process combination:
1. Multi-station stamping dies: These dies produce a part by moving the material through different stations, with each station performing a specific operation to gradually shape the final component. Examples include progressive stamping dies and transfer stamping dies.
2. Single-station stamping dies: Also known as single-stage or single-operation stamping dies, these dies are designed to created a single component or perform one operation per stamping press. Examples include simple stamping dies, compound stamping dies, and combination stamping dies.

Process Categories for Stamping Die _____

There are several process categories in stamping die manufacturing. Thanks to our strong resources in Dongguan City, we are able to offer a variety of stamping die processes, ensuring precision and quality that meet your specific manufacturing needs:

* Punching and Shearing Die: This type of die completes work through shearing. Common forms include shearing dies, blanking dies, piercing dies, trimming dies, flash trimming dies, drawing dies, and punch dies.
* Bending Die: Bending dies are used to shape flat blanks into angles. Depending on the shape, precision, and production volume of the parts, there are various forms of bending dies, such as ordinary bending dies, cam bending dies, curling dies, arc bending dies, bending and slotting dies, and twisting dies.
* Stretching Die: This die transforms a flat blank into a seamless container with a bottom.
* Forming Die: Forming dies utilize various local deformation methods to change the shape of the blank. Types include convex forming dies, curling forming dies, neck shrink forming dies, hole flange forming dies, and round edge forming dies.
* Compression Die: Compression dies apply strong pressure to make the metal blank flow and deform into the desired shape. Types include extrusion dies, embossing dies, impression dies, and end compression dies.

Advantages of Stamping Dies _______

In comparison to other machining and plastic deformation methods, stamping offers several unique advantages. The main benefits are as follows:

High Production Efficiency: Stamping processing is characterized by high production rates, ease of operation, and straightforward implementation of mechanization and automation.
Dimensional and Shape Accuracy: Stamping dies ensure the dimensional and shape accuracy of the stamped parts, providing long service life. The stamped parts are nearly identical, with stable quality and excellent interchangeability.
Versatility in Size and Complexity: Due to its high strength and stiffness, stamping can accommodate a wide range of sizes and complex shapes, from small terminals to large automobile girders.
Material and Energy Efficiency: Stamping typically generates minimal waste and does not require additional heating equipment, making it both a material-saving and energy-efficient process.

FAQs _____

  • What is a progressive stamping die?

A progressive stamping die, also referred to as a follow-on die, contains a series of operations within a single machine. Each station in the die performs a specific task under the press, and once the task is completed, the workpiece is automatically moved to the next station. After all operations are completed, the finished part is finally separated from the material or metal strip.Progressive die stamping is particularly suited for small components, such as terminal connectors and USB connectors.
  • What is a transfer stamping die?

The transfer die stamping process is similar to the progressive die stamping process; however, the part is detached from the metal strip as it is fed into the stamping stations. Components are produced by passing the workpiece through a series of consecutive stations within a single die. Transfer die stamping can occur across multiple presses or within a single press. This method is particularly suited for producing large and complex components, such as frames, shells, tubes, and other structural elements.
  • What is the main difference between progressive dies and transfer dies?

Progressive Die Stamping: In this process, the metal strip is fed into the machine, where the part remains attached to the base strip throughout the entire formation process. Once the part is fully formed, it is separated from the strip as the final step.

Transfer Die Stamping: In this method, the metal strip is fed into the first station, where the blank is cut. After this initial step, the part is released from the base strip. It then moves through various forming stations as an individual unit, undergoing further processing.
